Turtles
Around Town, a public art exhibit, celebrated
Mackinac's heritage and artistic expression, as well
as provided an opportunity to raise funds for the
community's nonprofit
organizations.
In celebration of its 10th anniversary,
the Mackinac Island Community Foundation, working
through the Marlee
Brown Community Arts Committee, brought Turtles Around Town and the Great
Turtle Festival to Mackinac to raise funds for the many charitable
groups that serve the Island.

The project, made possible with
a grant from the Sage Foundation, showcased local
artists, built on community partnerships, and provided
fun for residents and visitors.

On August 15, 2004, the turtles
were auctioned to the highest bidder at the Mackinac
Island Community Foundation's 10th Anniversary Celebration
held at Fort Mackinac. Turtles became
the property of the winning bidders at this event.
Governor Jennifer Granholm and First Gentleman Dan
Mulhern were Honorary Co-Chairs of the Anniversary
Celebration.
Thank you to all who participated and contributed to this event. Turtles Around Town raised $60,000 for the island's nonprofit organizations.

The Future is in Our Hands
Mackinac Island Public School
Turtles Around Town is a simple concept with a large impact: 21 giant fiberglass turtles were transformed into public art through the efforts of local artists.
This
project is based on Chicago's successful Cows on
Parade Exhibit. In Chicago, 300 life-sized fiberglass
cows adorned the city and delighted crowds. |
