The Great Turtle Festival was held on Mackinac Island July 5-7, 2004 featuring the following events:

Arts and Turtles: Design your own turtle and meet the artists who created the Turtles Around Town.

Artists will gather for cookies and lemonade and to talk about their turtles.

Budding artists will have the opportunity to paint a miniature replica of Mackinac’s Turtles Around Town.

Please note: 2:30 Concert with “the Turtles featuring Flo and Eddie” has been cancelled.

The Great Turtle Ball: An old-fashioned community dance, swing band and crowning of the "King and Queen Turtle"

Enjoy dancing and dessert.

Stick around to crown the King and Queen Turtle.

Games and prizes for kids

Raffle Drawing for the original Marlee Brown turtle painting (tickets are $50.00 each – available at MICF – must be present to win)

Live Turtles at "Wings of Mackinac"
Sponsored by "Wings of Mackinac," this fun and educational event will give children a first-hand look at some of the many different species of turtles.

The turtles will be on the porch so everyone has access to them for free. 

There will be someone there to supervise and talk about the turtles. 

On the lawn, there will be kids' crafts and activities like face painting and little turtle figurines for kids to paint. 

All the above will be free plus Wings of Mackinac will offer 50 cents off admission during the hours of 10 -12.

Community Concert
Savor a light luncheon and be serenaded by Mackinac’s finest musicians in Grand Hotel’s gracious surroundings, at Grand Hotel. For further information call MICF at 906-847-3701.

The program is free; guests should let admissions officers at Grand Hotel know that they intend to attend the concert.

Grand Hotel will offer a reduced rate on the Grand Luncheon Buffet of $25.00 per person

Program is approximately 70 minutes.

3:00 - 5:00 PM Turtle Tournament
Sponsor a turtle to win prizes and glory or compete in the dog/owner look-alike contest at The French Outpost.

Wind-up turtle toys from Great Turtle Toys will swim to victory and bring prizes to their triumphant owners. Sponsor a turtle for $3.00 and compete to win!

Dogs and their owners will gather on the grass. You can vote for the best-looking couple in this fun(ny) event!

Dr. Rex and Elizabeth Orr Fund for Animals was started in their memory by their daughters.  The fund supports animal welfare in recognition of Dr. Orr’s service to the Island as its veterinarian. Proceeds from the dog/owner look-alike contest will benefit this fund.

Tribal Talk and Writing Awards
The Martin Petersen Fund for Historic Writing representative Dr. Peter Olson will present the fund's annual award.

The purpose of the Martin Petersen Fund for Historical Writing is to encourage historical writing with special emphasis on the Straits region. According to Dr. Eugene T. Petersen, " The best case would be to inspire some local kids to do some historical writing." Grants encourage historical accuracy, readability in written pieces and commitment to the ongoing promotion of history.

There will also be a presentation on the significance of Mackinac and the turtle in Native American culture.

Anishnaabe/Ikado Chippewa Storytelling
Don’t miss one minute of Legendary Chippewa storytellers Simon Otto, Tony Miron and Jody Gastin who join together to teach and entertain in true Chippewa fashion.

PuppetArt “The Legend of Turtle Island”
PuppetArt presents the story of Mackinac through beautiful puppetry and sets; hosted by Grand Hotel. (Please be aware of the hotel’s dress code.  For dress code information call 1-800-33-GRAND). 

No charge for admission, but a donation $5.00 per adult would be appreciated.

Grand Hotel dress code after 6:00 pm is a coat and tie for gentlemen and ladies in a suit or dress; children do not need to wear coat and tie, but should be dressed appropriately.

Mackinac Island Community Theatre presents a reading of Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night
Dinner following the performance to benefit the Marlee Brown Community Arts Fund; hosted by Grand Hotel.  (Please be aware of the hotel’s dress code). Tickets are available at Grand Hotel.

Tickets are $50.00 (includes performance and dinner)– available at Grand Hotel to benefit the Marlee Brown Community Arts Fund

Performance in Terrace Room and dinner in Grand Pavilion.  Reservations are appreciated but not necessary.
