The foundation’s Youth Advisory Committee (YAC) continue to be instrumental in funding multiple grants this cycle, citing areas outlined in MICF’s most recent Youth Needs Assessment as important funding priorities.

Mackinac Island Community Foundation establishes Round Island Lighthouse Preservation Fund to preserve this iconic Straits of Mackinac landmark.

The preservation of an iconic Straits of Mackinac landmark is now ensured with the help of a new fund at Mackinac Island Community Foundation. The Round Island Lighthouse Preservation Fund was established this July by Patricia "Pat" Eckenstahler of the Round Island Lighthouse Preservation Society in honor of various parties who helped build, restore, and preserve the light.

Mrs. Eckenstahler and her husband, Chuck, have been with the Round Island Lighthouse Preservation Society since its inception, serving in founding and leadership roles with the organization. Individuals honored through the creation of the fund include the last lightkeeper of the Round Island post, Bert Proctor, and his daughter, Gerty Rocheleau, who Pat Eckenstahler became acquainted with following an overnight stay at Round Island Lighthouse as part of an auction purchase in 2005.

Mackinac Island Community Foundation establishes Island Essential Needs Fund to address impact of COVID-19.

April 8, 2020

In response to the impact of the novel coronavirus in the Straits region, the Mackinac Island Community Foundation has established a new fund to mobilize individual giving and address emerging critical needs of the Mackinac Island community. The Island Essential Needs Fund directs foundation resources to Island residents who have difficulty meeting basic needs during this time, especially those with serious illness or who have been adversely impacted by the Executive Order suspending all non-essential activities. In addition to addressing immediate individual needs, the new fund also provides support to vital Island organizations and services such as the Mackinac Island Medical Center and Meals on Snowmobiles.
